While Princeville officials figure out how to pay for a police department, the Edgecombe County Board of Commissionerson Monday voted 6-1 to approve a one-year contract to provide law enforcement protection to the town. Princeville was paying $250,000 annually but reduced funding to $125,000 in its 2016-17 fiscal budget. Edgecombe Commissioner Billy Wooten, who voted against the deal, questioned how the county could cut the contract in half and not lose money. Edgecombe County Manager Eric Evans said the reduction came from not needing to buy vehicles and other startup equipment and the town needing the extra help financially. County board Vice Chairman Jonathan Felton questioned whether it was favoritism to provide extra services to Princeville when other municipalities like Macclesfield pay for deputies by the hour. Evans said Princeville is paying for detectives, crime scene investigators and other support from the sheriffs office. Mayor Bobbie Jones said the committee needs to be looking for nonmatching recurring funds so the town can hire police officers on a permanent basis. We dont want to get peoples hopes up then have to disband the police department, Jones said. We need to be able to hire professionals: A chief, a detective and three patrol officers. Town Commissioner Linda Joyner said they need to find strong and informed people for the committee. The town board needs knowledgeable and experienced citizens to sit on the committee, said Town Commissioner Milton Bullock.
